Avoidance / Self Defense Tip #5
Avoidance
Awareness, avoidance and good decision making are key to your safety.
Most self defense scenarios could be prevented with just a heightened sense of awareness. Therefore avoidance will always be the key to your successful self defense plan. Seeing a situation develop is necessary if you want to avoid it. These situations when seen through a practiced eye can be easily identified.
Alert Clues
There is an often quoted saying that speaks to this idea, “The best fight is the one you were not in.” So what are the clues to a bad situation developing? Raised voices, angry faces and physical altercations are indicators of potential violence. Just leave. These situations are escalated at times by nothing other than your proximity. So walking away saves you from potential violence. Since proximity is so important, having an exit strategy is a must. Upon entering a room or building, note all exits. Avoid rooms that do not have multiple exits since this will put you at risk.
Because you cannot avoid what you cannot see, sit where you can easily view the entire room. Develop the practice of scanning a room not only for exits but other threats. Threats like intoxicated people or things that would inhibit your exit if necessary. Habits like these and others will make you a safer person.
